Things Worth Knowing: 12.30.14

Some charity must have shared my name. I have been barraged with new requests to support groups who state similar philosophies and missions. Some have snail mailed me address labels and decals; others have promised calendars and tote bags as a membership benefit. All seem to be worthy causes. ’Tis the season to give, but how to decide which causes are most worthy?

When you are involved in your community, you have a pretty good idea of how local organizations allocate their resources. You may know the executive director, serve on the board, or know others who do.

But how do you gauge the integrity of a national or international organization? How do you differentiate between two charities whose missions, philosophies, and perhaps even names seem so similar? I’m no Grinch, but I want to make sure that any gift I give really counts; I can always buy my own tote bag.

I turn to Charity Navigator to help me make the most of my financial contributions. 

Founded in 2001, Charity Navigator’s team of professional analysts has developed an “unbiased, objective, numbers-based rating system” to evaluate the financial health of over 7,000 of America’s charities. Specifically, Charity Navigator's rating system examines two broad areas of a charity's performance —its Financial Health and its Accountability & Transparency.

Go to Charity Navigator, enter the organization’s name, hit return, and, if it is in Charity Navigator’s databank, you will receive a rating of from 1-4 stars. Then click on the charity name to receive three scores: Overall, Financial, and Accountability and Transparency, followed by detailed information including percentage of donations spent on programs, and the salary of the executive director.

What you discover may surprise you. Of all the requests in my stack, the most highly rated was my local Connecticut Food Bank, with an overall score of a whopping 99.68 (out of 100) followed by the Sierra Club with 97.13 I discovered one of the well-known groups in the pile only scored two stars, with 72% of its budget spent on programs and services vs. 90% or more for the top-rated charities!

There are other useful tools on the site including: A Holiday Giving Guide, Top Ten Lists, 4 Star Charities, CN Watchlist, and Donor Advisories. You can also browse rated charities by category. If you are willing to create a free account, you will have the ability to compare charities.

Charity Navigator is a 501(c)(3), but it is not eligible to be rated since it has not yet filed 7 full years of Form 990s. It relies on donations from users of the site for its operating expenses and is now officially classified as a public charity. You can read more here

I hope this tool helps you navigate your way through the last of your year-end giving. Remember that as long as your credit card is charged in 2014, you can claim the contribution for this year.

Meatless Monday: Best Apple Cake Ever

One-half the recipe baked in an 8 x 8 pan
Apple Cake, from the cookbook Simply in Season, by Mary Beth Lind and Cathleen Hockman-Wert, is my goto recipe when I want a no fail cake that serves a lot of people. “Best apple cake ever” was the compliment this cake received when I brought it to a Thanksgiving dinner for which it was baked as a special request for people who might not want pie [!!].

Apples are the main ingredient in this cake; the others are probably in your kitchen cupboard. The apples do not have to be the most beautiful, or even the most crunchy. In fact, this is an excellent way to use up any fruit remaining from your apple picking trips in the fall. 

Here’s the recipe.

Apple Cake 
Serves 12-16

Preheat oven to 350° F
Grease a 9 x 13” pan

Cake
Ingredients

Combine in a large bowl
  • 5 cups apples, unpeeled and chopped
  • 1-1/3 cups granulated sugar
Combine in a small bowl
  • 1/2 cup oil [I use canola.]
  • 2 eggs (slightly beaten)
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla
Combine in a medium-sized bowl
  • 1 cup whole wheat flour
  • 1 cup unbleached white flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup nuts [Optional. I use walnut pieces.]
Method

  • Stir flour mixture into the apples alternately with egg mixture, beginning and ending with dry ingredients.
  • Pour into baking pan.
  • Bake for 50-60 minutes, until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. [Note: I would first test at 45 minutes.]
Topping
  • 2/3 cup brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon flour
  • 1/4 cup milk or cream
  • While cake bakes, heat to boiling, stirring occasionally.
  • Remove from heat.
  • Mix in 1/3 cup powdered sugar.
  • Drizzle over hot cake.
[Note: I have been told that if you are watching your carbs, you can omit the topping. But, also note that I have never gone this route.]

Normally I follow the directions and bake one cake in a 9 x 13 inch pan. This time I decided to bake two 8 x 8s — one to include in a gift box and one to keep at my house for a holiday treat. At 40 minutes, a cake tester inserted into the center of each came out clean. I hope my cake travels well!

Without soil we can't live. In recognition of this fact, the United Nations has declared 2015 the International Year of the Soils. 

In honor of world soil day, December 5, 2014, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO)  and partners made this beautiful film, Symphony of the Soil, available for free streaming for one week. Today is the last day for you to enjoy this gift. Check it out here.

The FAO site offers this summary of the film: This new documentary by Deborah Koons Garcia, director of The Future of Food, is an artistic exploration of the miraculous substance soil. Filmed on four continents, it gives voice to an amazing cast of soil users : from scientists to farmers, activists to policy makers, historians to entrepreneurs featuring esteemed scientists and working farmers and ranchers. Saturday Shorts: Ant Power


Something I read this week brought to mind the song “High Hopes,” the Academy Award-winning theme song of the 1959 film “A Hole in the Head.” The song’s lyrics celebrate the ability of one “little old ant” to “move a rubber tree plant.”

Armies of Ants Keep New York Squeaky Clean,” an article that appeared online in NewScientist Life on December 3, reported that ants and other arthropods remove a significant amount of food litter dropped in New York streets. Researchers from North Carolina State University placed potato chips, cookies, and hot dogs at dozens of sites in Manhattan and discovered that arthropods removed as much as 59 percent of the food within the space of a day! The authors of the study termed the contribution of ants to keeping Manhattan’s streets clean “modest, but notable.”  

Entomologist May Berenbaum, University of Illinois faculty member and recent recipient of the National Medal of Science, was quoted in the article as saying: "Recycling is among the least glamorous of ecosystem services provided by arthropods, and this was a great study highlighting both its magnitude and importance.”

A Google search for the number of ants in the world turned up this estimate: 100 trillion! Just think of the possibilities if we could somehow harness a fraction of that power!

Why Saturday Short Subjects? Some readers may recall  being dropped at the movie theater for the Saturday matinee — two action-packed feature films with a series of short subjects (cartoons or short movies, sometimes a serial cliffhanger) sandwiched in between. Often the short subjects were the most memorable, and enjoyable, part of the morning. That explains the name. The reason behind these particular posts is that we are all short on time. My Short Subject posts should not take me as long to write or you as long to read (or try).

Meatless Monday: Kitchen Tips for the Next Holiday


Thanksgiving 2014 has come and gone, but more holidays loom just ahead on the horizon.

Those of us who cook and bake have only just begun our work.

Here are a few tips to keep in mind as we prepare for the next celebration(s).

We should do our best to minimize waste. I have blogged about this before; if you want the statistics on how much food Americans waste each year, I invite you to click on this link

Just before Thanksgiving, Food Day and Interfaith Power and Light shared a guide to sustainable food choices and meal preparation; the tips apply to Hanukkah, Christmas, and New Year’s celebrations as well.

Here are a few tips of my own.
  • The water in which you boil a rutabaga (or other root vegetables) makes a great soup base. If you aren’t ready to make soup right away, freeze it for future use.
  • Leftover roasted vegetables (should you be lucky enough to have some) freeze very well when sealed in ziplock freezer bags. I have had particularly good luck with brussels sprouts and mashed butternut squash.

Stock up on locally-grown seasonal ingredients. 
  • Now is the time to buy the last of the locally-grown winter squash. Try to buy squash with the stems attached, and store them in the coolest place in your house. If you don’t have such a spot, cook and store the squash in the freezer.
  • Buy fresh cranberries while you still can. If you are not ready to use them, put the bagged berries into the freezer right away. They will last for months in their original bag; just be sure to rinse them well before preparing them.

And, of course, plan ahead, and do your best to pool your shopping trips.

Meatless Monday: Three Amazing Sisters

Many of us will feast on dishes of corn, beans, and squash this Thursday, just as  the Pilgrims and the Wampanoag did on what we consider the “First Thanksgiving.”

However, the corn the Pilgrims and Native Americans ate during that three-day celebration in 1621 was likely a bright-colored variety, and the squash and beans would also be unfamiliar to most of us. This link lists a number of heirloom varieties linked to Native American agriculture.

The Native Americans had been growing squash in combination with beans and corn for centuries before the Europeans arrived. They called the crops “The Three Sisters” and considered them a gift from the Gods. You can read the Mohawk version of the legend here

Squash is the oldest of the three crops. Fragments of domesticated varieties of Cucurbita pepo (the species to which the acorn squash and pumpkins belong) discovered in a Mexican cave in 1996 have been dated to be some 10,000 years old

Also around 10,000 years ago, farmers in what is now Mexico began selecting and planting grains from a wild grass called teosinte. Each year they saved seeds from the plants with the most desirable properties, and, over time, what we know as corn evolved. The identity of corn’s ancestor was a mystery until scientists in the field of genetic archaeology discovered that the DNA of teosinte and maize are very much alike. Corn was introduced to North American tribes via trade networks sometime around 1000 A.D.

Beans were first domesticated in what is now Mexico between 4200 and 3400 BC and arrived in the American Southwest through trade around 1500 BC. Over time, through seed selection, bush varieties requiring less water were developed.

Grown together as “companion crops,” beans, corn, and squash enjoy a symbiotic relationship. The corn serves as a pole or support for the beans. The intertwining squash provides shade at the base, helping to retain moisture in the soil and to keep down weeds, and the prickly hairs of its vine serve to deter pests. Beans help to replenish the nitrogen the corn removes from the soil with nitrogen they fix from the air. 

There are nutritional benefits to combining the crops as well. Corn is missing two amino acids, lysine and tryptophan, but has the one amino acid, methionine, that  beans lack. Thus, beans and corn, when eaten together, in a dish such as succotash, provide protein of a high nutritional value

Planting the Three Sisters is a tradition that continues to this day, as in this urban garden in New Haven, Connecticut. A successful Three Sisters garden requires certain conditions and careful planning. Cornell University has provided a detailed guide for gardeners and educators who want to recreate this method of farming. 

This Thursday let’s remember those who inhabited our country before the Europeans arrived and give special thanks for the Three Sisters garden.

Saturday Shorts: 11.15.14 America Recycles Day


Today, Saturday, November 15, is the 17th annual America Recycles Day.

For most of us weekly curbside pickup makes it easy to recycle paper, bottles and cans, and plastics. But there is so much more we can do, including:
  • eCycling. Take your old computers or other electronics to a local recycling center. This helps keep lead, cadmium, and other substances out of the landfill. Find eCycling centers near you. Some states, including Connecticut, have laws mandating eCyling. Best Buy is one location where homeowners can drop off a few unwanted items on each visit to the store. Select your state on the Best Buy site and you will see what items Best Buys in your area will accept. For more information specific to the greater New Haven area, check out this past post for more ideas. 
  • Cleaning out the basement. In New Haven, HazWaste Central is closed until spring, but that does not mean recycling has to come to an end. If you find chemicals, solvents, pesticides, alkaline batteries, or items containing mercury, set them aside, boxed, labelled, and ready for the first collection day in April.
There are quite a few items you can recycle in any season. You just have to know where to take them.
  • In CT, you can now recycle unwanted paint in a number of paint stores. There are a few rules to follow. Drop-off is free and is funded by a surcharge on every new paint purchase. Check here to see if you can recycle paint in your state. 
  • IKEA will accept CFL bulbs, rechargeable batteries, and plastic bags, as well as paper, plastic bottles, and cardboard.
  • If you live in an area where plastic shopping bags are still allowed, look for collection containers for used bags at the grocery store entrance.
  • Fluorescent light tubes can be returned to Home Depot stores.
  • Recycle your eyeglasses. Lions Club International accepts prescription and reading glasses, sunglasses and plastic and metal frames. Children's glasses are especially needed. Most of the recycled glasses are distributed to people in need in developing countries where they will have the greatest impact.  
And, of course, there is always something I know I need to do:
  • Thin out the closets. Never throw an article of clothing, no matter what the condition, into the trash. Goodwill will take it all, sort through it, and make sure your donation is put to its best use. Goodwill accepts many other household goods as well. Donating Dos and Don’ts are posted here. Donating your unwanted items to Goodwill helps provide employment opportunities in your community. Donations can also help you at tax time. Here is a valuation guide covering a wide range of donations. 
CT residents have a great resource in the “What do I do with…?” section of the CTDEEP site, covering items from “A” (Air Conditioners) to “Y” (Yoga Mats).

Meatless Monday: Baked Acorn Squash, So Easy, So Versatile

Welcome to my third post with the theme of easy recipes using native ingredients. [See easy cornbread from October 20 and cranberry sauce from November 3.]

This week’s featured ingredient is the winter squash, a thick-skinned fruit in the genus Cucurbita. Familiar species include the Butternut (Cucurbita moschata) and the Acorn (Cucurbita pepo, var. turbinata); pumpkins are varieties of Cucurbita pepo as well.

Most Thanksgiving feasts feature at least one winter squash dish — mashed, roasted, baked, topped with marshmallows, or baked into a pie. For many vegetarians, a squash baked and stuffed with nuts, seeds, mushrooms, or quinoa often serves as the main course.    

The Native Americans had been growing squash in combination with beans and corn for centuries before the Europeans arrived. They called the crops “The Three Sisters” and considered them a gift from the Gods. [More on this soon.] However, the squash they grew is not the squash we know today. Check this link for descriptions of some of the heirloom varieties. 

Acorn squash is very easy to prepare. 

You will need:
  • An oven
  • An Acorn squash [Butternut works, too.]
  • A sharp knife
  • A baking pan
  • Oil
  • Butter
  • Brown sugar or maple syrup
  • Salt and pepper

Here is the recipe: 
  • Preheat the oven to 350°
  • Wash the squash well.
  • Cut it in half lengthwise.
  • Scrape out the seeds.
  • Oil the edges.
  • Place the halves upside down in the baking pan.
  • Roast for 30 minutes.
  • Turn right side up.
  • Add a pat of butter, salt and pepper, and sweetener to taste.
  • Smoosh in a bit with a fork.
  • Return to the oven (right side up) for 20 minutes.
There you have it, the perfect addition to any T-Day feast or cold-weather dinner.

Meatless Monday: Cranberry Sauce, A DIY for Everyone

With Thanksgiving just a few weeks away, it seems appropriate to continue the theme of easy recipes featuring native ingredients. [See easy cornbread from October 20.]

You can make this, too!
This week’s featured ingredient is the cranberry (Vaccinium macropcarpon), a member of the Heath family, and one of the few edible fruits native to North America. It was originally known as the “craneberry,” because the plant’s small blossoms reminded the colonists of the head and bill of a Sandhill crane.

Some form of cranberry dish is common to nearly every modern day Thanksgiving feast, whether traditional, vegetarian, or vegan. It is also one of the easiest foods to prepare. [More on that later.]

For years before the Pilgrims landed on the shores of what is now Massachusetts, Native Americans had been crushing this wild berry for use as a fabric dye, as a medicine to treat arrow wounds, and in a high-protein food called “pemmican,” which was composed of cranberries, dried deer meat, and melted fat.

The cranberry requires several special conditions to thrive: sandy soil, abundant fresh water, and a growing season that lasts from May to October. When the Pilgrims arrived in the 1600s, the cranberry was growing wild on low-lying vines in beds layered with sand, peat, gravel, and clay-like material. Known as “bogs,” these beds were originally formed by glacial deposits. According to the Cape Cod Cranberry Association website, in 1816 Captain Henry Hall of Dennis observed that the wild cranberries in his bog grew better when sand blew over them. He began sanding his vines, his technique was copied, and the cultivation of cranberries began.

I grew up thinking that cranberry sauce came in a can, that was cleverly removed in one piece by opening the can at both ends and gently, slowly, pushing the contents onto a plate for carving.

But once I discovered that cranberry sauce is one of the easiest things to make, there was no going back for me. Homemade cranberry sauce has a kick that just doesn’t come with jellied sauce from a can. 

Every bag of fresh berries has a recipe printed on the back. You need five things:
  • A source of heat
  • A pot for cooking the sauce
  • Water
  • 1 cup of sugar
  • A 12 oz bag of cranberries

Here is the recipe: 
  • Rinse and the berries well and pick out any small stems or shriveled berries. (It is important to do this well.)
  • Dissolve 1 cup sugar in one cup water over medium high heat. 
  • When it boils, add the 12 oz bag of berries. 
  • Return to a boil.
  • Reduce heat and boil gently.
  • Stir often until all berries have popped (about 10 minutes). 
  • Remove from heat, pour into a bowl or storage container and cool. 
  • Then refrigerate until ready to serve.

There you have it, the perfect addition to any T-Day feast.

After your initial success, feel free to experiment. If you like a firmer sauce, use less water next time. If you like your sauce less sweet, cut the sugar.

November is the month when the produce bins are well-stocked with bags of these colorful, just harvested fruits. Buy a lot — for cooking now and for future use. They are easy to store; just pop the unopened bag in the freezer. There is no need to thaw the berries before you use them; you can use frozen berries in any recipe calling for fresh fruit.  Be sure to rinse them well and keep in mind that they will take a little longer to pop.

Saturday Shorts: When it Comes to Shrimp, Caveat Emptor

Oceana, the international advocacy organization focused on ocean conservation, released a report on Thursday, October 30, that has eco- and health-conscious seafood lovers reeling. Oceana used DNA testing to analyze shrimp products in grocery stores and restaurants across the U.S. and found that 30% of the samples were “misrepresented.” [Oceana defined misrepresentation as products that were “mislabeled (one species swapped out for another), misleading (e.g. farmed species labeled as ‘Gulf’), or mixed/mystery (e.g. commingling species among bagged shrimp).”]

Following are some highlights from the Oceana press release:

“In the only known study of its kind in the U.S., DNA testing confirmed that 30 percent of the 143 shrimp products tested from 111 grocery stores and restaurants were misrepresented. Oceana also found that consumers are often provided with little information about the shrimp they purchase, including where and how it was caught or farmed, making it difficult, if not impossible, for them to make informed choices. 

‘Despite its popularity, U.S. consumers are routinely given little to no information about the shrimp they purchase,’ said Beth Lowell, senior campaign director at Oceana. ‘While shrimp is the most commonly consumed seafood in the U.S., and the most highly traded seafood in the world, its high demand has led to conservation concerns as well as a bait and switch on consumers.  Without tracking what, where and how our seafood is caught or farmed, and ensuring that this basic information follows the product through each step in the supply chain, shrimp will continue to be misrepresented.’

Oceana found misrepresented shrimp everywhere it tested, including rates of 43 percent in New York, NY, 33 percent in Washington, D.C., 30 percent in the Gulf of Mexico region and 5 percent in Portland, OR…”

The report’s other key findings include:
  • “The most common species substitution was farmed whiteleg shrimp sold as ‘wild’ shrimp and ‘Gulf’ shrimp.
  • Forty percent of the 20 shrimp species or categories collected and identified were not previously known to be sold in the U.S.
  • Overall, 30% of over 400 shrimp products surveyed in grocery stores lacked information on country-of-origin, 29% lacked farmed/wild information and one in five did not provide either.
  • The majority of the 600 restaurant menus surveyed did not provide the diner with any information on the type of shrimp, whether it was farmed/wild or its origin.”
and, perhaps the most alarming finding:
  • “A banded coral ‘shrimp,’ which is an aquarium pet not intended to be consumed as food, was found commingled with another unidentified shrimp in a bag of frozen salad-sized shrimp purchased in the Gulf.”
What’s a concerned consumer to do, other than to avoid shrimp altogether? 

Monterey Seafood Watch offers recommendations for shrimp purchase, but they are only as good as the information on the label. 

In June 2014, President Obama created a dedicated government task force to combat seafood fraud and help keep illegally caught fish out of the U.S. market. Oceana is encouraging the task force to “take a comprehensive approach to addressing these issues, including requiring traceability for all seafood sold in the U.S. to ensure that it is safe, legally caught and honestly labeled.” Oceana invites concerned consumers to sign their petition here

Shrimp aren’t the only seafood with a sometimes fishy pedigree. In a study released in 2013, Oceana found that one third of the over 1200 samples of seafood they analyzed were mislabeled. Red Snapper was mislabeled 93 percent of the time; 28 different species of fish were identified in 120 samples of “red snapper.”  The highlights of the report are summarized in this infographic.

Caveat emptor.


Why Saturday Short Subjects? Some readers may recall  being dropped at the movie theater for the Saturday matinee — two action-packed feature films with a series of short subjects (cartoons or short movies, sometimes a serial cliffhanger) sandwiched in between. Often the short subjects were the most memorable, and enjoyable, part of the morning. That explains the name. The reason behind these particular posts is that we are all short on time. My Short Subject posts should not take me as long to write or you as long to read (or try).

It's Food Day Today

Food Day is an annual nationwide celebration observed on October 24, created by Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI), to address a variety of food issues including health and nutrition, hunger, agricultural policy, animal welfare, and farm worker justice. Food Day’s goal is to inspire Americans to change their diets and our nation’s food policies. 

In 2013 there were 4,700 Food Day events around the country, twice as many as in its first year in 2011. This year more than 8000 events are registered on the website – from special programs in school cafeterias, to rallies, community activities, and film screenings. Click here to find an already organized event near you. 

The Food Day website is rich in resources, including many ways to observe Food Day with family and friends. There are recipesgames, and even how-tos for hosting a fun and healthy Halloween party.

The Food Day site also has a number of infographics that are sure to spark some lively conversations.

Everyone can be a part of Food Day. Even if you are tied to your desk today, you can still participate in the Big Apple Crunch. Take a bite out of an apple at noon, and you will be joining thousand of others doing the same thing – all across the country. [In Ventura, CA they will be chomping on carrots!]

Meatless Monday: The Joy and Benefits of Cooking at Home

Food writer Mark Bittman makes a strong case that cooking and eating at home is good for you and for your family. In the “How to Eat Now” issue of Time,  Bittman wrote, “…not cooking is a big mistake—and it’s one that’s costing us money, good times, control, serenity, and, yes, vastly better health.”  

In his newest cookbook, How to Cook Everything Fast, he demonstrates how easy meal preparation can be if you are organized and do a bit of planning ahead. This latest addition to the How to Cook Everything series is full of hints on how to stock your kitchen, menus, preparation tips, and suggestions for making the most of your time. Even though I’ve been cooking at home for most of my life, I suspect I can learn a few tricks from this volume.

In the spirit of illustrating just how simple it is to cook at home, I thought I’d share a favorite cornbread recipe from The Moosewood Cookbookwritten by Mollie Katzen in 1977. 

You will need a few simple ingredients and an 8” or 9” square metal pan or ovenproof glass dish or a cast iron skillet (my pan of choice) for baking.


Delicious Corn Bread

Ingredients
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 1 cup buttermilk* (OR 4 Tbsp. dry powdered buttermilk and one cup of water)
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup yellow corn meal** 
  • 1 cup unbleached white flour
  • 2 tsp. baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp. baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 3 Tbs. melted butter


Method
  • Preheat oven to 425° (400° if using a glass pan)
  • Butter your baking pan well.
  • Beat together egg, buttermilk (or water), and honey.
  • Mix all dry ingredients together.
  • Combine all ingredients, including melted butter, and mix well.
  • Spread into buttered pan. 
  • Bake for approximately 20 minutes.
  • Test for doneness at 18 minutes. The tester (or sharp knife) should come out clean when inserted into the center of the pan. When the bread pulls away from the side of the pan that is a good indication that it is about done. You want the bread fully baked, but not dry.


*If you are doubtful that you will use up the remainder of the liquid buttermilk before it goes bad, try powdered buttermilk instead. Powdered buttermilk stores for months (the site claims years) when refrigerated, and there are clear instructions for its use printed on the container. Mix the powder with the dry ingredients and add water when prompted to add the liquid buttermilk.

**Bob’s Red Mill has a Non GMO variety if this matters to you.

My favorite cornbread pan — empty!
Cornbread is the perfect accompaniment to chili or stew and is great with butter and jam for breakfast. It reheats well if there are leftovers. Once you’ve made your own there will be no going back to the store-brought variety.

Meatless Monday: Musings on the "Great Exchange"

Columbus Day was once a big deal. First designated a holiday in Colorado over one hundred years ago in recognition of the dreams and contributions of the state’s hard-working Italian immigrants, Columbus Day was at one time an official holiday in 35 states. Now it is observed in just 23. In a growing number of places celebrations now honor indigenous people rather than the European explorer most associated with making first contact with the New World: Native American Day (South Dakota), Discoverers’ Day (Hawaii) and Indigenous People’s Day (Seattle and Minneapolis). 

Whatever your take on this “holiday,” it is interesting to reflect upon how much the world changed as a result of the “Age of Exploration.” The Mariners’ Museum terms the interaction of the Old World with the New “The Great Exchange: The Global Exchange of Cultures, Plants, Animals, and Disease.” 

The Museum has prepared a set of study guides to illustrate these changes. Click here to view a list of plants, their origins, how they came to be where they are today, and some of the societal changes unleashed by their successful propagation. 

Old World crops introduced to the Americas include sugar, cotton, bananas, and citrus. Some of the New World crops that were brought back to the Old World are cocoa, the tomato, the potato, and tobacco. 

Can you imagine Italian cuisine without the tomato, or Ireland without the potato? Or Florida and California without oranges and lemons? Or how different the history of the U.S. would have been if cotton had never been introduced to the South?

Its origins are centuries old, but as we all well know from today’s headlines, the Great Exchange continues to this day. Something to consider on this unique holiday.
